Keating Expands Further Into Cannabis, Launches Mattari Group

In response to the unique needs of the burgeoning cannabis industry, Keating Consulting Group has launched its first spin-off specialty practice - Mattari Group, LLC

Cannabis is nothing new to Keating. As Ryan Keating, CEO of Keating Consulting Group, explains, “Forming Mattari was a pretty organic decision for us. As Keating, we have already worked with several great cannabis-related startups over the past few years. Over that time, we have managed to build up a team with a deep understanding of the complex and evolving issues surrounding cannabis. We’ve gotten really good at it. So it just made sense to package that up and expand on it more aggressively.”

Mattari’s mission is to take the same finance, accounting, HR, and back-office expertise that Keating Consulting Group has perfected serving several of the Bay Area’s most successful tech startups and apply it to help grow startups in the cannabis arena.

“Starting a startup is hard enough,” says Keating. “Layer on the complexities and uncertainties in cannabis - tracking, COGS, 280E - along with the intense microscope under which these companies have to operate, and it creates a real challenge to founders trying to launch and grow a real business. That’s where our skillset really comes in handy, guiding founders through the minefield and helping them stay focused on growth. For almost two decades we have been growing startups [at Keating]. With Mattari, we get to expand upon that foundation with an additional focus on the specific issues challenging cannabis startups.”

Keating believes that the cannabis industry has quickly been forced to adopt a level of maturity where they will need to run a tighter ship to survive. “Just two years ago, there was almost a Wild West exuberance around cannabis that felt a little bubbly and chaotic. Today, things are starting to settle down and get real, which is healthy. Cannabis founders have to bring their A-Game and answer to real economics and investors like any other business. Demonstrating financial discipline, having a real plan, and reaching growth milestones are now a baseline requirement for survival. This is where Mattari Group will really shine. We are very bullish about what is happening in cannabis today, and we’re excited about what we can add to the equation.”

If you are a startup in the cannabis industry, give Mattari Group a call or email. Backed by the startup experience of the entire Keating Consulting Group, you will be in good hands.
